Volkswagen Creates Life-Size Pink New Beetle Convertible for Barbie ® 50th Birthday
This is a lead to a story I found about how Volkswagen has created every girls dream, a life-sized Barbie ® car! It is a pink Volkswagen Beetle convertible that has every detail a girl could imagine. From the 5 shades of color to make the perfect pink to the lipstick colored dipstick to the rhinestones and vanity mirrors, it’s the perfect Barbie® car!
This story is a perfect example of a media news release covered in chapter ten. It starts with the above lead to grab the reader’s attention and make them want to read the rest of the story. The angle gets the attention of the audience which would be those girls that grew up with Barbie’s® and had every outfit and car that came along with her. It definitely grabbed my attention as I was an avid Barbie lover. I had the houses, cars, outfits and even her swimming pool. When you read further into the story it details what the car is all about and how they didn’t miss a detail when trying to make it the perfect Barbie® car to celebrate Barbie’s® 50th birthday.
The car includes white custom leather interior and convertible top to the hand stitched floor mats and pink quilted leather lined door pockets and arm rests. The new convertible is even equipped with a motorized vanity in the trunk!
It is also written in inverted pyramid format with the most important information at the top. This would include the maker of the new convertible, Volkswagen, and a brief description of what the luxuries of the car would include. It next goes into details about her birthday celebration that was held at the Malibu Dream House ® in Malibu, CA. All the details about the house and how it is just like the one I would have had as a child. It mentioned that the birthday festivities were complete with 1,800 pairs of Barbie® sunglasses, 3,500 pairs of tiny shoes, 3,500 mini handbags and numerous Hollywood celebrity guests. It was a pink carpet affair which is when the new pink convertible was revealed. All of this information is located at the bottom of the story and if needed it could be edited out without affecting the meaning of the entire story.
At the end of the story it includes a boiler plate about the Volkswagen of America, Inc. About how it’s Virginia based headquarters are a subsidiary of Volkswagen in Germany. It talks about its different cars and what they come standard-equipped with. The story also has a little boiler plate about the Mattel Company, the maker of the Barbie® doll.
This is a great example of a media news release. It is written in the inverted pyramid format, has a captivating lead into the story to get the readers interested right off the bat and even includes a boiler plate about the two companies involved in this new car.

  1. That was a pretty interesting article. Being a guy, my specialties leaned towards undressing and/or ripping barbies heads off. It is pretty cool seeing the things we learn in PR being used in real life articles. Now, I wasn't sure if this car is a one-time thing or are they going to try to market these. I can imagine some rich daddy's little girls would love driving around in these!

  2. This is a very interesting blog; I say this because if it wasn’t for this blog I don’t think I would ever have known about Volvo creating a Barbie car. Unless one Barbie car just drove right by, it is also kind of a realization of how big Barbie actually is. It is such a symbolization of a childhood for girls.

Growing up I hated Barbies and I use to hide all my sisters Barbie toys, but I wish they would have had that Barbie car back then, because I probably would not have minded riding around in it.

  3. Wow. Barbie is getting old for one thing and the car they made seems amazing. It does sound like every girls dream. It almost seems like it has too much stuff for a car. If I saw a girl driving one of those cars, I think I would keep my distance, because the girl driving most likely is not paying attention to driving but to all of the gadgets in the car. It is definitely one of a kind dream car.

  4. Who would have thought that Volvo would create an actual real life size Barbie car. That is impressive to me that they made sure to get every detail. Who would really care if they missed on detail not me, but to a little girl i am sure she might. I agree with Zach Lee; like him i too ripped off my sisters Barbie heads and my brothers and i would even pretend to throw them out the car window. I did not think Barbie was already 50 years old, but like they say, "time flies".

  5. Wow a vanity in the trunk OMG! Now when you need to freshen up you can pull over and pop the trunk instead of just looking in the vanity mirrors. I hope they make a G.I. Joe Hummer soon with rocket launchers on the side that turns into a jet plane. Hey if Barbie gets one what about the boys we need a go Joe Hummer or at least a Kenmobile. The article as you pointed out is very informative and uses the inverted pyramid style and is a good example of a mnr.

  6. Well with the vanity in the trunk, the roads shouldd be a lot safer! Instead of seeing girls driving with their knees and applying eye shadow and looking in the mirror, you will have them on the side of the highways distracting young male motorists! It sounds like a never-ending battle. I am also a little jealous that their isn't a G.I. Joe Hummer for the men in this world!

  7. This article cracks me up. Although it is a good way to not only promote Barbie but also VW its just goofy that they would go to the lengths of making a pink car for Barbie. Now teenage girls can drive around pretending thier Barbie. Too funny!! I agree with Jim....whens the G.I. Joe Hummer comin out? Ill be the first to buy it!
